Artist Statement

Through archetypal and personal depictions of myself and loved ones, I hope to subvert worn out tropes and create new feminist iconography. I think of these portraits as mystical actions captured in paint, in which figures emerge from otherworldly landscapes. These dream spaces are composed of many layers and painterly languages. From smearing and pouring to spraying and pushing, I am always looking for new ways to transform this magical material.

My work references among others, Ana Mendieta and Carolee Schneemann, performance artists who used their bodies as a medium to explore their relationship to politics and the cosmos. Working in this tradition I choreograph rituals that take place during the painting process. Unlike my predecessors who recorded their actions with photography and film, I construct scenarios and tableaus as source material for my paintings. Whether growing and wearing a flower suit or pulling a thread from my vagina, I embody the paintings from the inside out. Seeds blossom and sexy threads spin into pictures of pleasure and freedom.

In a world of ever increasing technical images and information, digital mirages overlay the physical landscape to create a new meta reality. I am striving to capture how the human spirit navigates this terrifying and beautiful deluge of content. From art historical references, to augmented reality, to glitches and gaps, I am searching for wonder.
